Armenia: Caught between East and West

In the guest blog, economist Albert Hayrapetyan analyzes Armenia’s current position in the international political context.

Armenia, a small state in the South Caucasus, finds itself in a complex geopolitical situation. The country lies between two major economic unions: the European Union (EU) and the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU).

In 2013, Armenia began negotiations to participate in the EU’s Eastern Partnership program, which was intended to promote closer relations between the EU and six former Soviet republics: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine. The Eastern Partnership program provided economic and political support to these countries, including free trade agreements, visa liberalization and financial assistance. In 2017, Armenia signed a Comprehensive and Enhanced Partnership Agreement (CEPA) with the EU, aimed at deepening political and economic ties between the two sides.
