The summer school will bring together graduate students in the field of political science, international affairs and economics to explore the EU/EAEU relationships, state of the art, most recent developments in the field and the impact on small states such as Armenia or other regional players. The summer school will be conducted in English, thus enabling the participation of interested people not only from Armenia, but also other EAEU and EU member states. The summer school will also discuss research projects proposed by the participants (graduate students working on their Master or PhD theses in the field of EU/EAEU relationships). It will have two tracks – political and economic with around participants in each of them.

Track 1: Political

Participants who chose political track as their first preference will focus on the issues such as democracy promotion of the EU vs. autocracy promotion of the EAEU. Essentially, in their final essays the participants have to analyze whether Russia- centered EAEU promotes autocracy in the member states or not. Moreover, the participants will be introduced a number of theories of International Relations, both “grand” and “mid-range” which will help them to understand the political considerations behind the formation of the EAEU and the choice of the leaders enter in or cooperate with the EAEU. The former will inter alia draw upon the post-colonial literature, while the latter on David’s theory known as Omni balancing. The participants will also be invited to ponder over the choice of Armenia in light of securitization theory of International Relations with the aims to broaden the somewhat simplified discourse on EU-EAEU relationship as a zero-sum game where Armenia has to choose sides. To make the summer school interactive participants will be offered trainings on individual and collective negotiations skills. At the end of the training, they will have a simulation game on imaginary meeting between the members of the European Council and Supreme Eurasian Economic Council. In addition, a study visit will be organized to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs or the National Assembly of the RA. Overall, the following four subjects will be taught in then political track, each with 10 academic hours
1. Introduction to EU and EAEU institutions
2. Introduction to IR theories
3. Negotiations

Track 2. Economic

The students will be introduced to the economic aspects of both European and Eurasian integration. The economic policies of the EU such as CAP, fisheries, regional harmonization, single market and monetary policies of the ECB will be briefly introduced and paralleled with the existing practices in the EAEU. The focal point will be the analysis of the monetary policies of Eurozone states in light of the theory of optimal currency zone. The latter will be applied to check the expedience of introducing common currency in the EAEU, a hotly debated topic in political and economic circles of the member states. At the end of the summer school, the
participants will be tasked to choose a sector of Armenian economy and to analyze it against the background of the EAEU accession. In addition, a study visit will be organized to the Central Bank and the Ministry of Economy of the RA. Overall, the following four subjects will be taught in then political track, each with 10 academic hours:

1. Introduction to economic integration
2. Ex-ante and ex-post evaluation of economic integration
3. Introduction to pivotal economic policies and practices in EU and the EAEU

Apart from the ASUE professors, the EUCON project members and the representatives of relevant public offices will be invited to teach in the summer school and take part in open discussions. The course on negotiations will be offered by NGO representatives.
