On a Way to a New Kazakhstan? Article Published in the “Eastblog”

After several days of protest at the beginning of the year 2022, expectations in Kazakhstan for reforms are very high. In a blog post recently published with the “Eastblog” of the Austrian newspaper “Der Standard”, EUCON member Julian Plottka discusses prospects of Kazakh President, Kassym-Jomart Tokajew, meeting these expectations. Following a brief summary of the events in January 2022, he reasons that the President strengthened his position within the Kazakh political system. However, established elites still limit his power. The Russian war against Ukraine has further worsened his chances to succeed with economic reforms that increase the wealth of Kazakhs citizens, without touching the elites’ fortunes. In addition, the war has made it more difficult for upholding Kazakhstan’s traditional multi-vector foreign policy, which tries to balance the close relations with the EU and Russia.
