A1 IN BELARUS: IN THE WAKE OF POLITICS

The actions of companies are closely embedded in the political and institutional context of each country. The best current example of this is the Telekom subsidiary A1 Belarus.

Particular political risks need to be managed in countries outside the OECD world, where the rule of law, formal procedures, property rights and freedom of expression are either not implemented or only implemented to a limited extent and repeatedly threaten to be undermined by political arbitrariness. In phases of authoritarian stability, companies are confronted with predictable unpredictability in such a context. In the event of political destabilization and unrest breaking out, the fragile stability quickly falls apart. Political risk dynamics appear that demand a well-thought-out risk management system from companies if they do not want to be sucked into the maelstrom of events.
